Senior Consultant: Construction Finance, HR & Payroll

Contracted Position Available with Burger Consulting Group

Company Background

Burger Consulting Group is a Chicago-Based consulting firm established in 1994 that provides information systems management consulting exclusively to the construction industry. They work with mid-to-large sized contractors nationwide who are ranked in the top of their industry. Burger Consulting is an innovative small business on the forefront of their industry.

Position Overview

Burger Consulting Group (BCG) is seeking a skilled Consultant with significant expertise in Finance, Human Resources, and/or Payroll operations within the construction industry to support client engagements on a contract basis. This position is ideal for those who want to be deeply engaged in participating in client projects while still maintaining their independent consultant status.

Candidates are not expected to be equal subject-matter experts across Finance, HR, and Payroll. We are particularly interested in professionals who bring deep expertise in one or more of these functional areas, combined with sufficient cross-functional knowledge to understand how people, processes, data, and technology intersect across the organization.

Depending on the engagement, the consultant may participate in business process assessments, technology evaluations and selections, system implementations, process redesign, documentation, training, and change management initiatives.

Typical BCG Engagements

BCG consultants may be brought into an engagement independently or as part of a broader BCG project team. Assignments may include:

  • Technology and Operational Assessments – Evaluating current systems, processes, workflows, integrations, and organizational needs and developing practical recommendations and roadmaps.
  • ERP, HRIS & Payroll System Selection – Defining business requirements, evaluating potential solutions, participating in demonstrations, assisting with vendor selection, and helping clients understand the operational impact of their technology decisions.
  • Implementation Support & Project Management – Providing functional expertise throughout implementations, assisting with process decisions, requirements, testing, data validation, training, readiness, and coordination between the client and implementation partner.
  • Implementation Recovery / Optimization – Joining projects that have stalled, expanded beyond their original scope, or are not delivering expected results to help identify issues, establish priorities, and develop a practical path forward.
  • Business Process Optimization – Helping clients redesign inefficient or overly manual processes, improve controls, eliminate unnecessary work, and take better advantage of existing technology.
  • Fractional & Executive Advisory Support – Providing experienced functional or technology guidance to client leadership when specialized expertise is needed but a full-time resource may not be warranted.
  • Change Management & Adoption – Helping organizations prepare employees for new systems and processes through communication, documentation, training, SOP development, and practical adoption strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and, when appropriate, facilitate client discovery sessions, interviews, and workshops.
  • Assess existing Finance, HR, and Payroll processes and supporting technologies.
  • Document current-state workflows, pain points, business requirements, and operational risks.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, automate, or improve business processes.
  • Assist clients in defining functional and system requirements.
  • Support software evaluations, demonstrations, vendor discussions, and selection initiatives.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise during ERP, HRIS, payroll, financial system, and related technology implementations.
  • Assist with configuration decisions, process design, testing, data validation, and implementation readiness.
  • Develop practical recommendations that reflect the realities of construction operations.
  • Create process documentation, SOPs, requirements, recommendations, executive summaries, and other client deliverables.
  • Support training, adoption, and change management activities when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with BCG consultants, project managers, technology vendors, implementation partners, and client stakeholders.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to both operational teams and executive leadership.
  • Work independently when required while maintaining alignment with the broader BCG project team and engagement objectives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Significant professional experience within the construction industry, either directly with a contractor, construction software technology company, or as a consultant serving construction organizations.
  • Deep functional knowledge in at least one of the following areas, with working knowledge of how that function intersects with the others:
    • Finance & Accounting – Accounts payable and receivable, procure to pay optimizations, general ledger processes, project accounting, job costing, billing, expense management, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
    • Payroll – Construction payroll processes, time capture, labor costing, payroll administration, deductions, prevailing wage considerations, certified payroll, union or multi-jurisdiction environments where applicable, and integration between payroll, HR, accounting, and project systems.
    • Human Resources – Employee onboarding/offboarding, employee records, benefits administration, PTO and leave processes, compliance workflows, HR technology, and employee lifecycle management.
    • Business Process Improvement – Evaluating current-state workflows, identifying manual or redundant processes, developing future-state processes, and recommending opportunities for standardization and automation.
    • Technology & Systems – Evaluating how ERP, accounting, payroll, HRIS, timekeeping, project management, and related applications support business operations and identifying opportunities to improve system utilization and integration.
  • Understanding of construction-specific financial and operational concepts, including project accounting, job costing, labor/time management, and project-based business processes.
  • Experience evaluating and improving business processes.
  • Ability to understand how technology supports Finance, HR, Payroll, and construction operations.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable facilitating conversations with employees ranging from process owners and subject-matter experts to CFOs and other executives.
  • Ability to quickly understand a client’s organization, operating environment, challenges, and priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and become productive quickly within a client environment.
  • The understanding of the importance of onsite client visits and the willingness to travel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with construction ERP, accounting, payroll, HRIS, project management, or workforce-management platforms.
  • Experience participating in software selection or implementation projects.
  • Experience developing requirements, process maps, SOPs, testing plans, executive recommendations, or implementation documentation.
  • Familiarity with system integrations and data flows between ERP, payroll, HR, timekeeping, and project management applications.
  • Experience working directly with software vendors and implementation partners.
  • Previous consulting experience serving multiple clients or organizations.

BCG consultants are expected to bring more than subject-matter expertise. They must be able to listen, assess, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and translate complex operational issues into practical recommendations.
